Water Wings

Water, water everywhere and none of it to drink. Let’s be honest here people tap water may not be the picturesque spring flowing from an iceberg directly into your kitchen but it is not going to kill you. If you are concerned about the quality coming from your tap most water authorities can provide you with a water testing kit so you are aware just what you are drinking. This is not going to be one of those water horror story articles designed to push you to bottled water, but rather how small additions can greatly improve the taste. After all, the main reason most of us do not drink enough water is due to the better tasting options available on the market today. Water is a necessity of life, especially life in summer. Now well into the warmer weather our minds have shifted from hockey and skating to baseball and soccer, and who can blame us with the World Cup well under way and the Blue Jays doing as well as they have been this year.

While hydration is a concern at any time of year, it is especially important in summer. You can get dehydrated just sitting in the park watching your kids if you are there long enough without anything to drink. From casual outdoor family gatherings, a lazy day at the beach or a soccer game are all times where a lack of water can cause some serious problems. Almost everybody does not drink enough water, and the most common complaint is the taste.

When it comes to drinks drinkability is key, especially where children are concerned. From the obvious colas to energy drinks and even juices so many beverage options today are packed with sugar. While it may take a bit of work, making your own flavoured waters or mild juices offers an opportunity to know exactly what has been put into, or left out of, your homemade drink of choice.

After testing several varieties to create our best tasting option you will need:
2 Litres of water
½ cup each chopped cherries and cranberries

In a large juice container simply add all ingredients above and let the mixture rest for one day to have all the flavours infuse the water. For a faster option, you can mash the fruit before putting it into the water and then stir the mixture together. Chill and serve.

This year when heading outside for any significant duration please remember a bottle of water or two, and if you make it yourself using this recipe all the better! Some of the smallest changes can offer some of the most pleasurable results. Do not just take this recipe for what it is, take it for what is is not as well. This is only one version of flavoured water, if the mood strikes you feel free to expand your water wings and try mixes with whatever fruits your heart desires.
