Light & Refreshing Cilantro Dip

Chips and dip are built for summer snacking. These days there are countless options throughout the grocery store for both types of chips and styles of dips. Pesto dips, tapenade dips and hummus all offer pleasant options to dip your chip; however today’s special includes a cilantro and coriander mayonnaise dip.

The dip, a thick, condensed and flavour packed condiment can be customized in a number of different ways. Traditional style dips are typically based around sour cream or mayonnaise. While also considered dips: salsa, queso and hummus all entered our grocery scene through international influences.

Todays’ dip could be considered a fusion dish. Utilizing mayonnaise as its’ base is typically Canadian, and mustard is largely a spice that is familiar to us. However, the cilantro and coriander are relative newcomers on the grocery store shelves.

What you will need:

1/4 tsp. each coriander seed and mustard seed

¼ cup cilantro leaves

½ cup mayonnaise

  • Crush seeds (coriander and mustard) in a blender, with the side of a knife, or a rolling pin.
  • Add crushed spices and cilantro leaves to mayonnaise and stir until well blended.
  • Cover and chill until serving.

This cilantro inspired dip is one that will definitely stand out. While boasting about cilantro it must be mentioned that there is a well-documented minority of the population that finds cilantro repulsive due to its soapy flavour. If you are not a part of this sub group the dip can work great this Canada Day as a side dish for your celebrations. The bright and summery flavour of this dip can go great with chips, vegetables or even lighter proteins such as chicken or fish.   Whatever your plans for this Canada Day, enjoy the fun, the friends, the family but most of all the food.
