Spiced White Hot Chocolate

At times like these comfort is key. The holidays are over and routine begins to settle back into place. Finding things that are both comforting and a treat can become very valuable as we wait out this wicked weather. To some comfort is a good book, to others it may be a warm blanket and a roaring fire. For me right now nothing soothes my soul better than a hot chocolate.

Chocolate has had a lengthy past, dating back to the Aztecs. While the term chocolate was far from use, back then the cocoa was brewed into a bitter drink as opposed to processed into the brown sugary sweets we know and adore today. With how long chocolate has been around you might be surprised to find out that white chocolate is a relatively new development having its origins placed in the 1930’s.

There has been much debate over white chocolate. What is it? How is it made? Is it even really chocolate? White chocolate is made from cocoa butter and sugar, among other things. The main reason for all the debate over the validity stems from the fact that it contains no cocoa powder; the dark, bittering component of what has always given chocolate its brown colour. While dark, milk, or white all have their corners of the culinary world today I’m playing with white chocolate.

Recipe

Ingredients:

50g. white chocolate chips

200ml 2% white milk

1/4 tsp. ginger

1 pinch nutmeg

Directions:

  • In a small pot on low to medium heat melt chocolate chips.
  • Once fully melted add ginger and white milk.
  • Bring mixture to a light simmer, add nutmeg and pour into serving mug.
  • Serve

Putting the true taste and rich decadence of this beverage into words is not an easy task. The drink goes down like no other hot chocolate I have ever had. After one sip your lips become coated in a light film of sweet cocoa butter and slightly resembles the feeling of an extra thin coating of lip balm. Blending ginger and nutmeg together offers another level of complexity in a way that makes you look forward to the next serving. If a rich, sweet, hot drink may help keep the cold out this weekend, try this drink, you will not be disappointed.
