Crowd-pleasing Chilli for Superbowl Sunday!

The Super Bowl has fourty nine years of tradition behind it, and alongside the game, the advertisements and food to be served has become that of legend. While much debate rages over the perfect Super Bowl snacks, chilli has become a staple of tail gating, football, and of course the Super Bowl.

Canadian Cook is all about food, and food really comes down to a physical need, which has over time evolved into a (for some daily) social event. The days of the need for hunting parties may have past however any excuse to write about getting together with friends or family always holds a special place to us. Whether you like your chilli hot and spicy or mild and flavourful, there is literally a chilli for everyone. When catering to larger groups our recommendation is to lean on the conservative side with an available side offering of heat for those of your guests who look for that blinding heat that some chilli recipes can offer.

For todays milder chilli you will need:

2 Lb. Ground Beef

4 Medium onions, chopped

2 Medium Green Peppers, chopped

1 Can each of chickpeas, kidney beans, black beans and pasta sauce.

1 cup corn kernels

2 Tbsp. dried chives

2 Tbsp. dried chillies.

2 tsp. garlic powder

3 Tbsp. chilli powder.

  • Brown the Lean ground Beef in a large pot and add the dried chillies and onion at this point.
  • Once the onion has become translucent and the beef sufficiently browned add the remaining ingredients. Stir to a uniform consistency.
  • Cook on medium low heat for 45 minutes.
  • When serving top with grated smoked cheddar cheese.

Your basic chilli consists of a few common ingredients, while offering a multitude of ways to manipulate this dish into your very own. Beans, beef, tomato sauce and chilli powder offer an acceptable dish, however to truly call it your own, find something unusual, or different to add. Fruits and vegetables along with spices you choose to add or leave out can all allow for a signature flavour.  While we have shown you one of our simple chilli dishes, please experiment on your own.

Chilli is a versatile dish, not only in what can be included but its uses as well. Dished into a bowl as we have done, poured over nachos to add an extra level of flavour, as a topping into chilli dogs, or even into your own take on sloppy joes are all acceptable uses for leftover chilli.   Ever tried a chilli casserole??

Enough about all this food talk, enjoy the game!
