Apple Crumble Style Dessert

Years ago, as you walked through the produce department, there were no mangoes, plantains or artichokes. There were those staples we have all come to know; potatoes, carrots, onions and apples. We learned – or instinctively knew – what to do with these products. Apples, in any form, from fresh off the tree to baked for hours seems to have an endless array of potential. On these cold near winter days there is nothing like a sliced apple baked with butter and spices to liven up our frozen souls.

As the smell of baked apples combines with a mix of spices the familiar fragrance is next to heavenly. Is there really any better flavour combination than apples and cinnamon? Even as you mix the spices into the butter the aroma seems to take you away, to those Christmas’ past wherein everyone stuffed with turkey and trimmings patiently await the delectable dessert soon to be served.
Time to turn this fantasy into reality, and it really is not all that difficult:

3 sliced apples
3 Tbsp. butter
2 Tbsp. each; flour and brown sugar
1/3 cup oatmeal or rolled oats
Pinch each; cinnamon and allspice

Slice, core and peel (if desired) 3 apples of your choice. In a large mixing bowl combine all ingredients and mix thoroughly. In a buttered baking dish pour and flatten ingredients. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and cook for 30 minutes.

Three weeks, three recipes and one fantastic holiday treat. This time of year we all spend so much energy on others that if you so choose, take some time out and spoil yourself with this mouth-watering feast. What is not to love? From the juicy turkey drumsticks to the tart, wine laced dressing and to cap it all off this scrumptious apple dessert.

Happy Holidays and good cooking!
